README FIRST INFORMATION


The EMERALD and EMIT demo CD-ROM contains 5 separate demos of the training modules:
1. Physics of X-ray Diagnostic Radiology (vol.1 of EMERALD);
2. Physics of Nuclear Medicine (vol.2 of EMERALD);
3. Physics of Radiotherapy (vol.3 of EMERALD);
4. Physics of Ultrasound Imaging (vol.1 of EMIT);
5. Physics of Medical Resonance Imaging (vol.2 of EMIT);

All these run directly from the CD and can be read with most computers. Each demo is a Workbook to be used as e-Learning material, readable through an Internet browser.
The use of the e-Workbook requires an Internet browser (we recommend Netscape 4, IE 5 or higher) and Adobe Acrobat Reader (we recommend version 4 or higher), which can be downloaded free from www.adobe.com.


CONTENTS OVERVIEW


A. EMERALD

The project for European Medical Radiation Learning Development (EMERALD I) has been carried out by a Consortium of specialists from Universities and Hospitals in the UK, Sweden, Italy and Portugal. The second phase of the project (EMERALD II) included further partners from France, Ireland, Czech Republic and Bulgaria. The projects objectives were to develop and disseminate training modules for young medical physicists. The products of EMERALD are three Training Modules in Medical Radiation Physics, including Student Workbooks, Course Guide, Image Database (IDB) and Internet distributable e-Workbooks (in EMERALD II) on the following subjects:
1. Physics of X-ray Diagnostic Radiology - developed in the UK ;
2. Physics of Nuclear Medicine -developed in Sweden;
3. Physics of Radiotherapy -developed in Italy, Portugal, Sweden

Project support: EMERALD (I and II) have been completed with the support of the European Commission (EC) under the Leonardo da Vinci Program.

B. EMIT

The project for European Medical Imaging Technology Training (EMIT) has been developed by a Consortium of specialists from various Universities and Hospitals from the UK, Sweden, Italy and France with support from the European Federation of Organisations for Medical Physics (EFOMP). The project's objectives are to develop and disseminate training modules for young medical physicists, ultrasonographers and radiographers who use MRI and Ultrasound medical imaging technology. The products of EMIT are 2 Training Modules in Medical Imaging Technology, including Student Workbooks, a Course Guide, an Image Database (IDB) and Internet distributable e-Workbooks on the following subjects:
1. Physics of Ultrasound - developed in a team led by the UK partners:
2. Physics of Medical Resonance Imaging - developed in a team led by the Swedish partners;

INSTALLATION AND USE:

- Insert the disk into your CD-ROM drive (for example drive D: ) and locate the start files with Windows Explorer or Start>Run>Browse>file


- For e-Workbook (eW) start - RUN D:\Emerald2\index.htm
* This starts your default Internet Browser.
* Select the module related to your interest on the CD-ROM (for example - Diagnostic Radiology)
* The active hyperlink corresponds to the volume of the e-Workbook.
* This opens the frame-set of the e-Workbook.
* The left frame contains links to all tasks in the e-Workbook (Contents frame).
* The training tasks (and the respective slides) are organised in chapters - the Chapter name is in black colour, the task in blue.
* Click a task from the contents frame (on the left) to display a task with its images. PLEASE NOTE that this is a demo and only selected tasks are available here.

* The task opens in a middle frame with Adobe Acrobat Reader and an upper frame with image slides.
* Read the task (an Acrobat PDF file) using the functions of the Acrobat Reader. * All tasks present here are in English.
* If you wish, Save or Print the text in the PDF file through the functions of Acrobat Reader.

* Navigation in the pages or zoom facilities can be found at the bottom of the middle frame (below the Acrobat text).
* Help on using Acrobat Reader can be taken from the Acrobat software itself (locate file Reader.pdf in your PC).
* Click on the blue text to call a specific image, hyperlinked to the text.
* The corresponding image is displayed in a separate window which must be opened by clicking on the toolbar at the bottom of the screen.

* We recommend reading the text with hyperlinked images using two separate Internet browser windows. One browser window is for text and the other for images.
* Switch between the two windows (text and images) when necessary.
* Scroll the upper (slide) frame to observe the slides related to a chapter.
* Observe an image (in the separate browser window for images) by double click its slide.
* Use the browser functions to navigate the history of reading the material.

* The Course Guide Information plus all Training Timetables (i.e. the Contents of all modules) is available through hyperlinks in the contents frame.

N.B. Netscape opens a full screen image window, while Internet Explorer opens a sized image window.

TROUBLESHOOTING

Please note that it is necessary to have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed AFTER the installation of the Internet browser. In this case all necessary Acrobat plug-ins are recorded in the browser. If this is not the case, than when calling one task, the Acrobat window will not fit into the browser frame, but will come as a separate program window. To correct this problem you should re-install the Adobe Acrobat Reader (above the Internet browser).
Please note that if your Acrobat Reader version is old you could see a window suggesting an update. You could ignore this by clicking not to show this message again (the tasks text is readable with all Acrobat Reader versions above version 3).
