EMITEL - Encyclopaedia of Medical Physics
The need for this material was flagged up at the
International Conference on Medical Physics
(2003), as such reference does not exist. The
use of web technology with dictionary was
selected to support the global professional
development (especially education and training).
EMITEL project was led by King’s College London
and included as partners King’s College London,
University of Lund and its Hospital, University
of Florence, AM Studio, Bulgaria and IOMP.
The encylopaedic articles are grouped in 7 categories – Physics of: X-ray Diagnostic Radiology, Nuclear Medicine; Radiotherapy; Radiation Protection, MRI and Ultrasound Imaging, General. All articles were developed around a common template, refereed and included in a web database with two Search engines – Multilingual (to search inside the Dictionary) and English (to search inside the text of the articles). All articles were uploaded at an original web site with Content Management System (allowing update of materials) by AM Studio.
The evaluation of EMITEL had 2 stages - by experts (through a Special International Conference) and by group of users (students from KCL MSc Medical Engineering and Physics). The positive feedback was used to update the materials. The project attracted senior professionals from 36 countries, forming an International Network, coordinated by KCL. The results of this project are the largest reference and educational tool in the profession, which currently has 7000+ users per month.
EMITEL is now open for new entries, contributors of text, diagrams or images please email these to: vassilka.tabakova@kcl.ac.uk
